GLOSSARY

Adult Day Health Care and Adult Day Care Centers
For those who do not need nursing home or assisted living facilities, adult day health care provides a more affordable and flexible type of caregiving. Adult day health care and day care centers are intended to help children care for their parents, including nights and weekends. Programs are typically available for social, health and therapeutic assistance.

Assisted Living Facilities or Residential Care Facilities
For those who need personal assistance or custodial care, assisted living or residential care facilities provide room, board, and assistance with activities of daily living. There is a wide variety of facilities offering a home-like atmosphere and social activities.

Home Care
Home care is custodial care intended to help with daily activities, ranging from meal preparation to laundry and housekeeping. Those providing home care do not need to be licensed.

Home Health Care
Home health care is provided by licensed nursing personnel via a home health agency. Services are intended for those who require assistance but prefer to stay in their own home instead of assisted facilities. Types of care range from medically oriented care to assistance with daily living activities.

Hospice Services
For those who are terminally ill, hospice services are designed to provide palliative care and alleviate the physical, emotional, social and spiritual discomforts of an individual who is experiencing the last phases of life. Hospice services also provide supportive care to the primary caregiver and the family.

Medicaid
Medicaid is a state-assistance program providing health care services to people of every age with low income and few assets.

Medicare
Medicare is a government healthcare program for people 65 and over.

Respite Care
Respite care provides relatives, friends and family members relief when providing long term care to a loved one. Services are available in the home or at a facility.

Skilled Nursing Facilities
Similar to assisted living, skilled nursing facilities offer custodial care in addition to medical assistance. Typically, skilled nursing facilities are needed for rehabilitative care or for those with cognitive impairments.
